Pros and Cons of Septic Tank Risers Have you heard of a septic tank riser? In my experience in the plumbing industry, I think one of the most common things I hear is that a homeowner is not sure where their septic lid is. Most of the time, this is not an issue. Most plumbing companies will be able to locate your lid for you. However, it may be an issue for you because of the location fee. You can try to get a map of the county, but that leaves the buried lid issue. Usually, there will be a fee to dig the lid out as well. You might want to have a septic tank riser installed.

A riser is basically exactly what the name suggests. It is either a concrete or plastic pipe that runs up to ground level from your septic tank opening.

Risers will usually be about a foot to two feet in diameter. The length of them will depend on how far from ground level your tank lid is. This is generally between 2-4 feet, but all tanks are different. Buried lid? A riser is beneficial. It may cost more upfront, but in the long run, it will save you the hassle of another location and dig.

Fortunately, installing a riser is a simple, routine procedure. If you’re unaware of where your tank is located, your technician can find it with a camera or a ground probe. They will then dig up your lid. Once exposed they will replace with a riser. Then, they simply refill the ground around the riser and replace your lid.

Like we said before, installing the riser will cost a little more upfront. This may not be something you are willing to invest in if you’re planning on selling your home. But if you are not, this will save you some time and money in future services. Service your tank at least once every three years.

Another thing to consider is that the riser may extend above the surface of your lawn. Some people find this less than desirable. What you can do is have the riser installed so it comes just a couple of inches short of the surface of your lawn. This way, you can let a thin layer of soil and grass accumulate on top of it. This will both hide it from view and also be easy to uncover once you are due for a service.
